What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a completely natural 'state' that we go into every day, like daydreaming or focusing on one thing to the exclusion of everything else. When we are in this temporary 'state' we are still aware and in complete control and can quickly return our attention back to the room whenever we want to.

It is while we are in this relaxed and highly focused state that we can bypass our logical, critical mind and access our deeper, more creative subconscious and be more receptive to positive suggestions.

Hypnotherapy is a fast and effective tool which should leave you feeling completely refreshed and positive at the end of each session. Change can happen immediately or in the days or weeks to follow or may be so subtle that you don't notice straight away.

Hypnotherapists use hypnosis as a tool, often alongside other tools such as CBT or NLP for therapeutic purposes.

Frequently asked questions
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Hypnotherapy is very safe and is approved by the British Medical Association, but only when carried out by qualified therapists.  It is not recommended for people suffering from certain conditions, such as dementia, epilepsy or psychosis and it is advised that you check with your doctor if you are currently undergoing any medical treatment or have an undiagnosed condition.

What guarantees do you offer that it will work?
Like any therapy or medical intervention, there can be no guarantees. Hypnotherapy is not magic and neither does it control your mind. It is a collaborative process where I act as a guide but the results come from within you. Everyone is unique and I personally tailor the therapy to suit your individual requirements.  I can however guarantee that I will work with you to the best of my abilities and let you know if I think I can't help or I think someone else could help more.

How does hypnotherapy work?
When in a deeply relaxed and highly focused state, we are able to quieten down our logical, conscious mind and access our subconscious, which is more responsive to suggestions.

One view is that everything we see. hear or touch is stored in our subconscious and, over time, these experiences form the underlying beliefs and assumptions we make about the world and drive our behaviour and the way we respond. That’s why people tend to see things differently. As these experiences get repeated and reinforced, new neural pathways are formed until eventually these thought processes become so fast and automatic that we are no longer aware of them, like learning to walk or drive.

The brain has to constantly make generalisations in order to process all this information but sometimes these generalisations and patterns of thought are unhelpful and this leads to unwanted responses and behaviours.

Fortunately, the brain is learning and changing all the time and, through hypnotherapy, we are able to reframe these negative and unhelpful thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour to ones which are more beneficial for us.

Is it confidential?
Everything you tell me will be held in the strictest of confidence, unless it is  something that risks causing you or someone else serious harm.  If there is  anything you would rather not talk about, I will respect  your  privacy.
